Released in 1998, Bigg wasn't out six months before he was arrested again. 'I probably wrote 500 to 600 songs per year while I was inside,' he said. Already cutting his teeth in the rap game, Bigg said, he honed his skills while in the penitentiary. After an apparently ineffective stint in boot camp, Bigg was arrested again in 1994 on charges of reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, the result, he said, of a shootout and car chase that ended in a crash. In 1990, at age 19, he was arrested on charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, putting a strain on his relationship with his father, a Mobile police officer. I was in the street.' He's notorious in the local music industry for his refusal to sign a deal unless he controls the rights to the music.

Many of the other rappers in the film - Mos Def, Obie Trice and Ice Cube, among others - enjoy broad recognition and the backing of major music labels.
